Measure with string or paper

  1. Wrap a strip around your fingerUse string, a narrow paper strip or dental floss, something that won't stretch. Wrap it around the base of the finger you'll wear the ring on.
  2. Mark where it overlapsIt should sit comfortably: you can slide it a little, but it doesn't fall off.
  3. Measure and matchLay it flat on a ruler and measure the circumference in millimetres, then find that figure in the Circumference column and take the US size on that row.

Measure a ring you already own

  1. Line it up on a rulerAlign the inside edge of the ring with the zero mark.
  2. Measure the inner diameterRead across the widest point, inside edge to inside edge, in millimetres.
  3. Match it in the chartFind the figure in the Inner diameter column and take the US size on that row.

Getting it right

Measure at the end of the day. Fingers swell naturally, so an evening measurement is the safer one.

Consider the band width. Wider bands feel tighter at the same size; for a wide ring, go up half a size.

Measure more than once. Three readings on different occasions, then take the average.

Mind the temperature. Cold shrinks fingers, heat expands them; measure at room temperature.

If in doubt, size up. A slightly loose ring can be adjusted with a sizing insert or by a jeweller; a tight one is much harder to fix.

Common questions

What if I'm between two sizes?

Size up. A slightly loose ring is more comfortable than a tight one and simpler to adjust; a small sizing insert usually solves it.

Does ring size change during the day?

Yes. Movement and warmth increase blood flow, so fingers are largest in the evening. That's why evening measurements are the most reliable.

Can I measure without a sizer?

The string method above needs nothing but a ruler. If you have a ring that already fits, measuring its inner diameter is even simpler.
